What I would like to do is hook up a 12 volt motor from a golf cart to a 12 volt dc battery and have a timer to ture it on and off for a certain period of time.

I've put batteries in quite a few golf carts. Hate to tell you this but they usually run a 36 volt motor that gets it's power supply from 6 batteries wired in series. But you can buy any number of 12 volt dc motors. You need to know how much torque and what rpms you want to run at. Timers are no trouble to buy and very easy to set up. Hope this helps!
